Few knockout ties at this World Cup are bigger than Portugal versus Spain. Two European heavyweights, packed with world-class talent, meet with a place in the quarter-finals on the line.
Portugal reached this stage after overcoming Croatia in dramatic fashion, but their performances throughout the tournament have been inconsistent. Roberto Martinez's side have shown flashes of quality, particularly through Bruno Fernandes, Vitinha and Rafael Leão, but they have also looked vulnerable defensively and have relied on moments of individual brilliance rather than dominating matches.
Spain, on the other hand, appear to be peaking at exactly the right time. After easing past Austria 3-0 in the previous round, confidence is growing that Luis de la Fuente's side are genuine contenders for the World Cup. They remain one of the tournament's strongest defensive teams and have yet to concede a goal during this campaign, while continuing to control matches through possession and intelligent movement.
The battle in midfield could decide everything. Rodri, Pedri and Merino have consistently dictated the tempo for Spain, while Portugal will need Vitinha and Bruno Fernandes to produce one of their best performances of the tournament if they are to gain control.
Spain also possess tremendous pace and creativity in wide areas. Lamine Yamal continues to be one of the breakout stars of the competition, constantly stretching defences and creating opportunities, while Mikel Oyarzabal has rediscovered his scoring touch. Portugal certainly have enough quality to cause problems, particularly if Cristiano Ronaldo, Rafael Leão or Gonçalo Ramos get opportunities inside the penalty area, but Spain look like the more balanced team across the pitch.
These nations know each other extremely well, so a tight contest should be expected. However, Spain's defensive organisation, superior ball retention and current momentum give them a slight but important edge heading into this knockout clash.
We expect Portugal to make life difficult, but over 90 minutes Spain should have enough quality to book their place in the quarter-finals
